Oscars Challenge #5: Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Four films are in, and many still remain. I know that not all Best Picture winners are impressive and will let me jump out of my seat. There are some that are just plain okay.

Slumdog Millionaire to me is like that.

It is about a contestant (Dev Patel) in the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? who was able to answer every question despite his educational and personal background. He gets accused of cheating and states that the answers came from his experiences in life.

I still think that this film is unlike any normal movie even though it is a book adaptation. It presents the story well and most of the film were flashback scenes to illustrate how the main character answers the questions correctly. It has a good number of high and thrilling moments that would let you grip onto your seats.

Do I think this film deserved the Best Picture award? I do. However, if I compare it to its competitors in the 81st Academy Awards, I am pretty sure it had a neck-to-neck battle with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Milk which I think also both deserved the prestigious award. It is a tough one definitely.

I do feel that this film is a must-watch still especially if you want to learn about the Hindi culture.
